You can tell that there are three of them. They smell... unfamiliar, but human. As far as you can tell, they are in a calm mental state. They don't seem scared or panicked like most of the rest of the population.
The trail stays mostly off-road or on small side-streets avoiding the highway and in a b-line direction toward the last nearby shard. After several hours of tracking, the scent seems to become stronger, more fresh than before. You're getting close.

"You'd think they'd at least be exited about finding the shards." James says. "I'm guessing they already know what they are."

"Hmmm. Well, this could be good or bad. If they're not Wyrm, then we might be able to strike a bargain with them, or recruit them to help us fight whatever that thing was."

"I'm not holding out any hope for that..." James says. He makes sure his gun is loaded.

"My bet is magi, but thats just a guess. Ulric, can you try scent of the true form on this spot?" he asks while gesturing to a heavy track?

"Let's just get the jump on these guys. Check 'em out first hand."

He'll sniff the spot to see if he can actually tell what they are from the old tracks. If not he'll let them know and continue on. If so he'll let them know and continue on. Funny trend...

They smell... mostly human. 99%, but the 1% isn't something you've smelled before. Kind of musty, like old books. As you follow the trail, you begin to hear voices.

James will listen in as best as he can. Is it English? What do I roll?

Let's go with Dex+Stealth, diff 6, to keep from being heard yourself. It's English, near as you can tell from here.

2 successes (three ones, a three, a nine, and two 10s, with a 7 and 8 on explosions).

Wow, crazy.
Well, I guess you get to engage them sooner than I was expecting. Alrighty!
James, you stumble over a root and land in some bushes. They don't see you, but they heard you.
"Did you hear that?" "Yeah. Must've been an animal or something." "Dude, if you haven't noticed, there really aren't many animals around right now." "So? No one in their right mind would be out here in the middle of the night." "Exactly." "Come on, we should just get it and go."
Four distinct voices. What forms are everyone in?

Homid (thanks to the stone). It appears at least a verbal confrontation is necessary, so I'll go ahead and turn on Obscure the Truth and Persuasion.

Crinos, but I'll shift back to homid just to make this a little easier than it might be walking in there as a huge hulking wolf-thing.
